Teach your child to read and write in Spanish
Kickstart their ability to communicate in multiple languages. Start while they are young!
Why is it important? Besides being useful socially, learning a second language will help your child 'basically become smarter in every way'.
Learning a second language can be hard. It requires dedication, practice, and regular exposure. If that is not easily found in your natural environment learning a second language or teaching that second language to your child seems almost impossible. I used to wish and wish that I had learned a second language while I was young. If only I could speak it now so I could teach my child in the home. I wished that we had started out speaking two languages in the home ALL THE TIME. But, that just didn't happen.
And Then I Found Abuelita!
Abuelita has created a Spanish program unlike any other I have found. It teaches both spanish and english speaking children to read in Spanish. Her program is affordable and the presentations and concepts are easy to accomplish with your young child.
Abuelita Spanish is a bilingual homeschool reading program. Children will be taught to understand Spanish vocabulary words, read and write letters, recognize their sounds, count numbers, count syllables, and more!
Constant exposure can make all the difference! It is a series of 197 short video lessons with follow-up activities that reenforce the concepts and vocabulary learned. This series of lessons will teach a young child (and their parent) to read in Spanish. The lesson plan is simple to follow. Each weekday simply watch the 5 minute presentation, do the 10-15 minute activity while repeating the Spanish vocabulary. This adds up to a 15-20 minutes per day then you are done! You can move through the program as slow or fast paced as you like.
Section 1 - Lines:
Lessons 1 through 10 teach about Lines
Section one teaches the child about vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines. She doesn't just cover the lines themselves but all the simple yet significant concepts to go with them. For example, in order to understand where to begin and end you need to know "go" and "stop" and in order to discuss "horizontal" you need to know right and left.
All of these concepts and vocabulary are needed to teach the child to read and write the letters. This is foundational information, Abuelita is detail oriented and explains things in a simple and concise way that will guide children through reading with the most firm foundation possible.
- Foundational concepts needed for "writing readiness"
- Vocabulary learned and reviewed with FUN activities and songs
- SIMPLE and EASY for parents and teachers to do with young children
- A perfect start to getting to know Abuelita and learning to read Spanish.
"My kids love to watch Abuelita. Their confidence in learning grows as they are successful with her activities.
Even my youngest likes to watch and repeat the words and sing the songs, though he is not ready to read and write. It is fun for all of us."
Once you have completed Section 1 - Lines, move to section 2 - folding.
Section 2 - Folding & Coloring:
Lessons 11 through 15 teach a child Folding and Colors
This section will teach children to hold a pencil or crayon, fold paper, learn the names of the colors in Spanish, and color the paper in a methodical organized way, preparatory to using that control and ability to write letters.
Case Study: I tried to teach my child to write on writing paper. I didn't realize that she saw writing paper the same as any other paper. She would write all over the paper and not pay attention to the lines showing how and where to put the letters. I tried to explain but it ended in frustration.
Abuelita's simple yet thorough explanation and activities solves that problem, completely.
Inside Section 2, you'll discover...
- Simple yet foundational concepts and abilities for your child to begin writing
- Follow Abuelita and develop focus and control in simple coloring activites.
- Useful Spanish vocabulary to prepare them for future lessons.
- Confidence with success and understanding.
Once you have completed this section the child will begin writing lines.
Section 3 - Writing Lines:
Lessons 16-20 teaches children drawing pictures and using lines
Once the child knows the various lines and can create writing paper and has developed the ability to color with focus and control, the child can begin writing lines. This section has lessons and supportive lessons that will teach the child to write tall and short vertical, horizontal, diagonal (left & right), and curved (left & right) lines. Knowing these simple concepts and recognizing the difference between a curved line to the left and a curved line to the right, then being able to create that on writing paper is essential to learning to read and write!
- Your child will learn to WRITE 'tall' and 'short' preparatory to learning capital and lower case letters
- Your child will practice writing vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines - preparatory to writing letters.
- Your child will develop confidence that will carry into learning to write letters.
"These writing lessons were so simple, we went through them quickly. My daughter was so happy as she got things right."
Now that you child knows the concepts and vocabulary to write, he or she is just about ready to learn letters. But first children need to know names and sounds.
Section 4 - Names and Sounds:
Section 4 will teach children "nombre" and "sonido", and how that relates to the letters.
All letters have a name and a sound. In Spanish the name and the sound of the vowels are the same. The name and the sound of the consonants are different. Children will learn conversational Spanish, "¿Que es tu nombre?" (What is your name?) while preparing them to learn the letters.
- Learn conversational Spanish
- Have fun learning the names and sounds of animals in Spanish.
- Learn what it means to be the "same" and "different."
- Learn about how the names and sounds relate to vowels and consonants.
Did you know...
With well over 35 million Spanish speakers in the United States, and with over 40% of the population growth being among the Hispanic people, the stage is set for an enormous increase in Spanish usage in the United States. This has sparked a lot of interest among US citizens, a group not particularly known for their multilingualism. This interest will only increase as the Hispanic population of the US approaches 50 million by the year 2015. But it's not only in the US where Spanish is popular. In Europe, Spanish is the second most popular second language, after English. With some 400 million speakers, Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Only Mandarin, English and Hindi have more speakers. If you count onlynative speakers, Spanish outranks English. Spanish is an official language on four continents and is the mother tongue in 21 countries. The sheer number of Spanish speakers and their rate of growth makes learning Spanish a smart choice.
Once a child knows the lines, folding paper, colors, writing on writing paper, and how names and sounds relate to the letters, they are ready to learn LETTERS.
Section 5 - Vowels:
Section 5 will teach children the Vowels.
Learning the letters it is a great time to incorporate further vocabulary. Abuelita doesn't miss a chance to incorporate multiple concepts wrapped into one simple and easy to understand package. The children will be learning about the letter "A" while simultaneously learn about capital, lower case, the sounds of other letters, and spelling!
- Learn the name and sound of each vowel.
- Learn an animal or object that begins with that vowel.
- Learn to sound out all the letters to spell the animal object that goes with that vowel.
- Fun activities attached to each lesson to make learning fun.
- After children learn the vowels they are ready to attach them to consonants and reading!
Section 6 - Consonants & more:
Section 6 will teach children the
consonants and practice reading.
Section 6 is split into 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4. It is the longest of them all, 154 lessons! There are a lot of consonants, but more to learn too! Each consonant is attached to a vowel and gives Abuelita a chance to discuss more vocabulary, counting syllables, learning numbers, and other concepts to deepen an overall understanding of Spanish and reading.
- Learn all the consonant letters names and sounds.
- Learn vocabulary that goes with each letter.
- Practice spelling and sounding out words and phrases in Spanish.
- Practice reading short stories in SPANISH
Once your child has completed and understood all 6 Sections with the presentations and activities of the Abuelita Spanish program your child will be primed to READ SPANISH. This is the perfect foundation for furthering their study of language and communicating with multiple languages throughout their life.
